Ten things I love

Ilona bakes

Thanks for stopping by my website! If you want to learn more about me, here are ten things that I love.

Don’t forget to check out some of my recipes too. Oh, and if you have a question, or just want to chat, drop me a line!

So, ten things I love..

  1. Bread. Especially Sourdough. I love eating it, baking it, baking then eating it. Take me to a restaurant and I will fill up on bread and butter. Doesn’t matter if the menu is fancy – just means the bread will be even tastier. I love to bake and eat sweet things too – that’s if I am not too full on bread.
  2. Hot chips. If there are chips on the menu, it’s the one time I will try not to fill up on bread. I have been known to order chips for entrée and then for main. I kid you not.
  3. Coffee. I drink so much coffee. Can’t stop, won’t stop. Sometimes, I can also be seen drinking a beverage with a Maraschino cherry in it.
  4. Cats. Bernard is my special little grey man. He is an eight-year old British Shorthair who has been part of our family since he was three months old. He owns us.
  5. Dogs. Growing up, I had a poodle named Benny. He was with us for 17 years. I would like a toy poodle – grey coloured, of course. But, see point 4 – Bernard has vetoed this decision.
  6. Travel. My favourite place on earth is Japan. I’ve been many times and will keep going. But, I love so many places across the globe. A lot of what I bake has an international flavour, inspired by my travels.
  7. All things vintage. I collect vintage West German pottery. And vintage cookbooks. And vintage fashion. And vintage furniture. I am an old soul.
  8. Precision. I am never too far from my metal ruler and kitchen scales. I try to include cup measurements in my recipes, but kitchen scales are not very expensive and will always yield a more consistent, more delicious bake.
  9. Feelgood tv and old films. I love watching cooking shows, and reality tv shows. When the two combine (e.g. Bake Off!), I’m in my happy place. I love films from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Some of my faves are Singing in the Rain, Breathless and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
  10. The city I live in. I live in Melbourne, Australia with my husband and cat. We are surrounded by Middle Eastern, Indian, Japanese and Italian restaurants, bakeries and grocers – which fills me with endless inspiration and joy.

I’m with you on the chip front but do miss a well made chip! Potato flavor and smell mixed with hot oil and salt reminds me of beachside holidays. Our furbaby is a 13yo chocolate Burmese. She’s tiny so some mistake her for a kitten, but she insists she’s human (and a royal at that!) Love your bakes 💕💕💕

    Hi Ilona
Was wondering if you would share your recipe for the chocolate sponge you made for chocolate week on GABO. I cannot seem to have success with a chocolate sponge!! Loved watching you during the series. Many thanks.
